Escape the crowded cruise line tours on our Quintessential Rome shared shore excursion from Civitavecchia! With an average group size of only 4 people and no more than 8, you will enjoy a very personalized experience that differs greatly from the bus tours of 50 passengers (or more) offered by the cruise lines.
The Capitoline Hill (Campidoglio) is one of the seven famous hills of Rome. At the top of the sloping staircase designed by Michelangelo for both pedestrians and passenger-carrying animals like horses and donkeys, you will find an elegant piazza (also designed by him) lined with Renaissance buildings. In the centre of the piazza, a striking bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius stands proudly, reminding us that Rome belongs to the people of Rome.
At the Colosseum, immortal symbol of The Eternal City and home to the gladiator tournaments of Ancient Rome, you will have the choice of going inside or free time (approx. 30 min).
If you decide to go inside be sure to request that we book your fast-track ticket.
At the Palatine Hill, you will get a taste of the glory of the Roman empire. Here you will see the remains of the Emperor’s palace that overlook Circus Maximus, where 250,000 Roman spectators once watched the chariot races.
Walk through the narrow, winding streets to Trevi Fountain, where exquisite baroque sculptures depict a metaphoric scene of the ocean as represented by horses and titans of mythology.
From Trevi, you will proceed on foot to the Pantheon, an excellent example of ancient Roman architecture. The massive structure with its coffered dome was built in 126 AD as a temple to all the gods of Ancient Rome.
At the world-famous Vatican City, you will be given time to visit St. Peter’s square and basilica. The basilica is the largest church in the world, filled with fine pieces of art including, most notably, Michelangelo’s Pieta and the beautifully carved pulpit by Bernini.
Please be aware that you may encounter long lines to enter the Basilica and must pass through a security checkpoint. Appropriate attire is required; you will not be permitted to enter with uncovered shoulders or short shorts/skirts.
